Is it just us, or does it feel like we're answering the same questions over and over again, no matter who we're talking to.

The family members that won't stop asking you about why you're single, the friend that won't stop gossiping about people from highschool, the acquaintance who wants to know why you don't invest in cryptocurrency and the work colleague who's still complaining about the Game Of Thrones season finale.

Not every conversation has to change your life, but I know you're sick of answering the same question time and time again. It feels like with every average chat you're having, you're missing out on the chance to build true intimacy.

So what's the solution to this "problem"?

You literally have a thousand different options, but I'll suggest what I've found to be most effective with any and all people.

Ask more interesting questions.

Sounds condescendingly simple, but we know for a fact it's not. It's hard enough to be an active listener, who's also empathetic, funny and tells jokes with perfect punchlines. And now you've also got to have a plethora of thought-provoking questions ready to go?

Here's where conversation cards come in.

WHAT ARE CONVERSATION CARDS, ANYWAY?

They're simply playing cards with questions on them, designed to help you delve a little deeper when chatting to anyone (from strangers to loved ones)

They can also help to:

  • build intimacy
  • increase connection
  • minimise awkwardness
  • challenge limited thinkings
  • expose bias
  • highlight barriers to connection
  • increase understanding
  • build chemistry

Conversation cards are a great way to ask questions you actually want to answer (and want an answer to!).

'The 36 Questions That Lead To Love' have been a big talking point for the past years (you know that viral game where you answer these questions with strangers and then you look into eachothers eyes for about 4 minutes and then you're meant to fall in love?), but conversation cards don't necessarily need to lead to love. They can be excellent ways to get to know yourself, or your conversational duelling partner, better.

WHICH CONVERSATION CARD GAMES DO YOU RECOMMEND?

Have we made the subtle, and not so subtle, art of conversation sound good? We're an Australian novelty homewares, card games, and lifestyle store curated, especially for those who like to think, laugh, and play. We love a good chat and were really tired of gossiping about old high school sweethearts. Lucky you, because that thinking is why we made ReFlex. If you do run out of questions, and the conversation runs dry, we have a whole bunch of expansion packs to make sure you're never stuck talking about the weather or having to justify your relationship status.

HOW DO I PLAY?

You can play however the heck you like, but we ourselves like to do it like this.

  1. Pick a card. Any card.
  2. Answer quickly and on reflex (sorry, had to do it).
  3. Analyse WHY that was your answer.
  4. Where did it come from? Friends and family? School?
  5. Pick the question apart. Was it leading you down any particular path?

WHAT ARE SOME POTENTIAL TOPICS?

Conversation cards and games can differ from the free online downloadable ones and their naturally somewhat lacklustre offering to very clever, thickly printed cards that make you have an existential crisis or two (or not lol)

Here at Flex Factory, some of our cards deal with:

  • critical thinking
  • love
  • lifestyle
  • career
  • politics
  • aliens
  • pop culture
  • entertainment
  • religion
  • millennials

I DON'T WANT TO HAVE A DEEP CONVERSATION WITH EVERYONE. CAN'T IT BE CASUAL?

We hundred percent understand where you're coming from. Deep conversations require a lot of mental and emotional energy, and you might not want to do that.

Rest assured, you can choose who you wish to continue having drab conversations with and with whom you'd like to delve a little deeper. Our advice, give everyone and anyone a chance to have a conversation worth remembering.

Perhaps nobody has ever asked your historically boring coworker whether they'd rather be attacked by a stampede of duck size horses or one horse size duck.
